8/8/2008  DRAPERS - 9 Aug 2008 edition - Shipton & Heneage is looking to open its sixth store after sales grew by 10% year-on-year to £2.2 million.
The classic footwear independent, which specialises in selling traditional Northamptonshire-made styles for men and women, said its "debt-free" position meant it was defying the retail slowdown and planned to look for its sixth shop in London's West End or the City after Christmas.Co-founder James Cookson said: "We are not that worried about the credit crunch. We set the business up when we were going through the last recession and no one would lend us any money back then, and it's turned out that we didn't need it."Two or three years ago people approached us to buy the business and do all sorts of wonderful things with it, but we felt we weren't quite ready yet and we're still not quite ready. There are lots of things we want to do."Shipton & Heneage has two store in London, in Fulham and Battersea, one in Crieff in Scotland plus two shops in Paris. It also has a significant mail order and internet operation, which generates the largest proportion of its sales. It prints 250,000 catalogues for the UK market each year and a similar number for shoppers in the US.The business was founded 18 years ago to offer traditional English-made shoes to wealthy middle-aged men. All of the footwear stocked is branded Shipton & Heneage. Retail prices in the UK range from £129 to £209.As well as classic English styles, the retailer also stocks some Italian-made loafers and slippers

21/5/2008  Forbes.com - Shipton & Heneage Slippers, $460
Wearing your slippers on the street might sound like a bad leftover habit from college, but for a certain set of men, velvet driving shoes paired with rolled-up Japanese denim and a tucked-in, rumpled button-down has become the coveted look. The slipper collection from British shoemaker Shipton & Heneage comes in a variety of colors and styles, from purple velvet to skull-embroidered black. What's more, each heel is supported by a leather sole, so it feels as if you're wearing real shoes that are as comfortable as, well, slippers.

That's slippers to you- and not the around the house, cheap as chips ones. No; out-and-about, proper, solid slippers are what's courting my appeal today. Why? They feel like an extension of the 'Mary Janes' Hedi Slimane was providing at Dior Homme a few years back- the visual appeal lies in the way that you can see a good amount of sock (or bare ankle) in an almost feminine way when they're worn; something that's enhanced by the vogue for rolled-up jeans and pegleg trousers. The connotations of establishment, bohemianism and the upper-classes are also perhaps part of the appeal. The ones above are by Shipton & Heneage, who report a 30% rise in sales apparently. But velvet, embroidered slippers have been on the radar for a while too, propping up in amongst the Lanvin and McQueen at Selfridges, Harrods et al. But it's taken a while for them to slip into the mood of the moment; but with the best A/W men's shows playing on femininity in a subtle, intelligent way, they'd be a good bet for next season. And incredibly dapper, too- just minimal and slick enough to look fresh after endless brogues and Oxford shoes. Shipton also has a Paris collection which does tasselled loafers; plus, there's the eccentric ones covered in white embroidered Ivy, pictured above (it would be great to style these up in a 2008, 'nature boy' context) in front of the wealth of embroidered logos, all of which you can have put on the front of your slipper- you can have anything from a family crest, to strawberries, to the scales of justice on your toes. Imagine that.

S&H has just launched a new model, the New York Derby. Made in the English city of Northampton, the New York Derby is instantly recognisable as a fresh-faced update of one of the world's most classic shoe designs.
